The project includes 78 Hitachi railcars, as well as the replacement of the existing signalling system with an Ansaldo CBTC system.

Hitachi says that the trains have been designed to be safe and comfortable, and have a 30-year life-cycle capable of providing an average journey distance of 129,000km per year.

Each metro car will have a capacity of 196 passengers, 76 of which are seated. Each train provides access for less mobile passengers, and is equipped with a passenger information system, a train communication system, WiFi connection, and an integrated diagnostic system in the driver’s cab.

The fleet will be built at Hitachi’s facility in Miami, Florida, and the first train will enter service in 2021.
