Etihad Rail plans to build more than 600km in Stage 2 and a further 250km under Stage 3. When both stages are completed in 2024, the Etihad Rail network will extend west to the Saudi Arabian border and to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah, and the Omani border to form part of the 2177km Gulf Railway being promoted by the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Egis will supervise the engineering consultant responsible for preliminary design and construction supervision, as well as the future design-and-build contractors and third parties.
The project was suspended in January 2016 due to a slump in oil prices.
