LACMTA wants to select a master developer by the end of 2018 to plan, design, construct and operate projects on the land it owns around Union Station. The station currently handles 116,000 passengers per day, and this is expected to grow to 220,000 by 2040.

The Link project comprises:
•construction of new tracks over a highway at the southern end of the station to convert it from a dead-end into a through station
• a new loop line to allow trains to arrive and depart from either direction
• reconfiguration of the station throat and yard tracks
• a new passenger concourse with retail, food services, passenger waiting areas, and other amenities, and
• provision for future projects, including the West Santa Ana branch LRT corridor project and California High-Speed Rail.

A new draft environmental impact statement and environmental impact report (EIS/EIR) should be released in the first quarter of 2018, with a final EIS/EIR expected to be certified by the end of 2018.
