Siemens will supply its Trainguard Sirius CBTC, an automated train protection and operation system, which will guarantee driverless Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) operation, in common with the rest of the 42km line which Siemens has already equipped. In case of an incident, the CBTC is able to maintain safe train operation thanks to a backup mode based on a speed-codes Automated Train Protection (ATP) system.

The contract includes two new stations and a depot, as well as platform screen doors. When the extension is completed in 2024, it will provide a connection with the 43km Thomson-East Coast Line, currently under construction, at Sungei Bedok.

The east-west Downtown Line transports up to 500,000 passengers per day and currently runs from Bukit Panjang in west via a loop through the Central Business District to Expo in the east.
