The Belgian Railway Safety and Interoperability Service (SSICF) decided on February 21 to withdraw Captrain's Part A safety certificate and, as a consequence, Captrain’s Part B safety certificate with immediate effect.

The Part A certificate proves that the means used, the organisation and the procedures put in place by the operator are sufficient to control the risks and ensure the smooth running of its activities. Part B confirms that the arrangements made by the operator meet the specific requirements necessary to operate safely on the Belgian network. These can relate to technical requirements, national safety rules and the criteria for safety personnel and rolling stock.

Captrain subsidiaries in neighbouring countries, despatching trains into or through Belgium, are trying to find other operators with a Belgian safety certificate to move their freight trains in Belgium. Meanwhile, Captrain Belgium is reported to be trying to address the concerns of SSICF in order to regain its safety certificate.
