ESSEN Transport Authority (Evag), Germany, has awarded a Euros 72m contract to Bombardier for a fleet of 27 Flexity Classic trams. Two pre-series trams are due to be delivered to Essen in August 2013, with delivery of the series-production vehicles scheduled to begin in March 2014.
Each three-section bi-directional tram will be 30m long and 2.3m wide to give a capacity of 172 passengers. The trams will be powered by Bombardier's Mitrac traction system.
"The tender was based on good experience with proven 70% low-floor technology which is characterised by a smooth ride and high comfort, low wear and tear on tracks and wheels, and a long operating life," says Mr Klaus-Peter Wandelenus, Evag's chief technical officer.
