The Eem 923 locomotive, which was christened Heitern after a mountain near the yard, is the first of 30 1.5MW units being supplied by Stadler Winterthur, Switzerland, under a SFr 88m (95.9m) contract.
SBB Cargo commissions first hybrid shunting locomotive
A ceremony was held today at Limmattal marshalling yard near Zurich to mark the entry into service of SBB Cargo's first hybrid shunting locomotive.
The second locomotive will be delivered in May and the remaining 28 will be delivered at a rate of one every three weeks, with the last due to enter service at the end of next year.
The Eem 923 allows drivers to switch rapidly between the electric drive system and auxiliary diesel power. The locomotives will operate under electric power for 90% of their duties, only using the diesel engine on non-electrified sidings.
SBB Cargo says the introduction of the Eem 923s will allow it to reduce CO2 emissions from shunting operations by 4000 tonnes per year.
