The contract was signed by SKM president of the board, Mr Alan Beroud, and Newag CEO, Mr Zbigniew Konieczek, on April 7, after Newag was awarded the order at the beginning of March.

The first Impuls 2 vehicles will enter service at the beginning of 2022, with the full fleet in operation by the end of November 2022.

The order, which is worth Zlotys 667.9m ($US 160.5m), is the largest ever placed by SKM. The European Union is providing Zlotys 202.6m for the order through the 2014-2020 Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme.

Newag will supply 15 five-car and six four-car trains, which will be based at SKM’s facilities in the Odolany district. The contract also includes employee training and seven years’ maintenance.

The EMUs will be equipped with a modern passenger information system, ticket machines, Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, USB chargers and AEDs, and will be adapted for passengers with limited mobility.

“This is good news for the residents of the capital and towns near Warsaw, especially those commuting to work every day,” Beroud says. “We know how much they are waiting for these trains. The new Impuls 2 from Newag will increase the comfort of their everyday travel, and strengthen SKM’s lines that enjoy the greatest interest of passengers.

“We also plan to use the new rolling stock to launch further connections following renovation and modernisation works within the Warsaw Railway Junction.”

SKM carries more than 22 million passengers a year, providing connections around Warsaw, to Chopin Airport and to Otwock, Legionowo, Radzymin, Sulejówka Miłosny and Pruszków.
