The order will increase VBZ’s Flexity fleet to 110 vehicles. The first LRV under the initial order was delivered to VBZ in November 2019 and entered service in October this year.

The 43m-long LRVs offer greater energy efficiency and 20% more passenger capacity than VBZ’s older Cobra LRVs. The vehicles equipped with obstacle detection and regenerative braking systems, LED door status indicators, USB charging points, digital passenger information systems and multimodal areas for wheelchairs, strollers or luggage.

The LRVs also offer improved accessibility compared with older vehicles, with wider doors and a 100% low-floor design.

“I am very pleased that we can now order an additional 40 Flexity trams for Zürich as the need for public transport will continue to grow as the population increases,” says Dr Guido Schoch, director of VBZ. “More than 50% of Zürich’s citizens do not own a car, so in order to maintain this high proportion, the public transport on offer must be attractive to our customers.”
