Trackwork contract awarded for Wendlingen - Ulm HSL

GERMAN infrastructure manager DB Network has awarded a joint venture of Rhomberg Bahntechnik and Swietelsky Baugesellschaft a contract worth around €250m to install trackwork and infrastructure equipment on the 59.6km Wendlingen - Ulm high-speed line in Baden-Württemberg.

The joint venture will be responsible for the construction of 118km of slab track, including more than 60km in tunnels and 16 points. It will also install telecommunications, 50Hz low-voltage systems, telecommunications, traction power supply.

The contract calls for the installation of 2500km of cable, ventilation systems, signage, and 78km of LED handrails.

The planning phase will begin in February and the 30-month installation phase is due to start next year.

Rhomberg will take the technical lead on the project while Swietelsky will be responsible for commercial aspects, as well as overall coordination, project logistics, and construction site safety.

The new line will be built for 250km/h operation, reducing the Stuttgart - Ulm journey time from 54 minutes to 28 minutes.
