The project involves adding a third track and a fourth on some sections along with two new stations. Existing bridges across the Danube will not be rebuilt under the project but the connections between the bridges and the main line will be improved while reconstruction work will take place at two stations.

A handful of steel overpasses along the line will have to be replaced by new, three-track bridges, while a concrete bridge requires widening.

ETCS will be installed on the line and the existing block signalling system will be removed with the complete Budapest-Kelenföld - Ferencváros section regarded as one signalling block.

The design and construction contract will run for six years with a deadline of December 31 2027. The contract is weighted 70% by price and 30% for technical expertise. Bids are due by December 14.

The project will increase the axle-load limits on the line from 210kN to 225kN. Vehicle diagnostics equipment will be installed along the line. The new stops will facilitate transfers to light rail services and suburban HÉV services.
