Mr Liu He, member of the Political Bureau of China’s CPC Central Committee and vice-premier of the State Council also unveiled the Sichuan-Tibet Railway project construction headquarters.

The Ya’an - Nyingchi section will 1011km long and have a design speed of 120-200km/h. China National Railway estimates it will take 10 years to complete the project.

The first section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway from Chengdu to Ya'an opened in December 2018, while construction of the Lhasa - Nyingchi section started in June 2015.

When the Sichuan-Tibet Railway is completed in 2030 it will cut the Chengdu - Lhasa journey from 48 hours to 13 hours.

China’s president, Mr Xi Jinping, who has called for the completion of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway, described the project as a major step in safeguarding national unity and consolidating border stability, and significant to promote economic and social development of western region.
