CHINA has approved a Yuan 14.84bn ($US 2.23bn) project to electrify the 1136km Golmud - Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway, which China claims is the world's highest and longest plateau railway.

The project will include resignalling and the replacement of turnouts, for which bidding is underway. In addition, three stations - Anduo, Naqu and Dangxiong - will be upgraded.

Electrification and the other improvements are expected to increase capacity, reduce operating costs, improve reliability, and cut CO2 emissions on this line serving Tibet,

Work is expected to start in June and be completed within three years.
