The new 180km/h line will run from Bari Centrale, partially following the existing Bari - Taranto line inland, before turning west towards the coast and reconnecting with the existing Bari - Lecce line at Bari Torre a Mare.

The project is part of the redevelopment of the Bari railway hub, which will serve the under-construction Naples - Bari high-speed line that will improve connections between the Campania and Apulia regions in southern Italy.

D'Agostino Angelo Antonio Costruzioni Generali will be responsible for the planning and construction of the project, and has appointed RPA - Technital to undertake the design of the line.

The open tender for the contract received interest from 11 companies. Italferr says that due to the complex nature of the project, the award procedure required careful verification of the general, technical, and anti-mafia requirements.
