The €250m project involves the construction of a 31.8km single-track railway line, with provision to add a second track, connecting Kavala port with the existing Thesssaloniki - Alexandroupolis line near Toxotes Xanthis. The line will have a maximum speed of 160-200km/h.

The new line will form part of the Thessaloniki - Amphipolis - Kavala - Xanthi rail corridor, which is included in the European Union’s TEN-T core network, and 50% of the funding for the project will be provided by EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
