The consortium comprises Yooshin Engineering Corporation, Korea, Balaji Railroad Systems Private Ltd (Barsyl), India, China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group (CREEC), China, and Full Bright Consultancy, Nepal.

The Bharatpur - Hetauda - Nijgadh line will form the central section of a new standard-gauge mixed-traffic railway spanning Nepal from the Mahakali zone on the western border with India to Mechi on the eastern border with India. The line will be electrified although the voltage has not yet been decided.

“The implementation of the project is to facilitate public transport, boost economic activity by connecting places within Nepal and to facilitate a trade corridor with India and possibly with China in the long run,” Mr Navin Kumar Jha, Barsyl’s regional head, north, told IRJ.

The entire project is expected to cost around $US 3bn and according to Jha will probably be implemented as public-private partnership scheme.

Construction could start two years from now and it is likely to take between five and six years to build the new line.
