STRABAG Rail and local partner V-Híd will upgrade the 30km line from Békéscsaba to the Romanian border in south-eastern Hungary under a €364m contract.

The contract covers the construction work, installing overhead line electrification, safety and signalling systems, road construction and civil engineering works.  The maximum speed of the railway will be increased from 120km/h to 160km/h as part of the upgrade.

Three stations will be upgraded on the route including park and ride facilities. Kétegyháza and Lökösháza stations will also be adapted to be barrier-free. This is the final single-track section of railway along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T)  in Hungary.

“The dual-track upgrade of this section of railway from Békéscsaba station to the national border will help to modernise an important link along the TEN-T,” says Mr Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag. “This improves the connection between internal markets and the Black Sea ports.”
