The Rs 49.3bn ($US 673.9m) project is expected to be completed between 2024-2025, and will be used to promote tourism to the region which features sites such as Shravasti which is closely associated with the life of Buddha.

The new line, which will form part of the North Eastern Railway, is expected to generate direct employment during construction and boost industrial development in the region. It will also pass through four districts identified as developing areas, with the line expected to improve socio-economic conditions in the districts.
