THE Philippines’ Department of Transportation (DOTr) has awarded Thales a €156m contract for the supply of integrated communications and supervision (ICS) systems and an automatic fare collection (AFC) for the under-construction Metro Manila Subway.

The new Pesos 370.1bn ($US 7.19bn) 35km line will run from Quezon City to Ninoy Aquino International Airport and will consist of 15 underground stations. The line is forecast to carry 370,000 passengers a day in the first year of full operation when it opens in 2027.

Thales will design and develop integrated and secure communications networks including radio, multi service networks, wayside telephone and Wi-Fi systems. This is the first time Thales’ has implemented its ICS equipment in Asia.

Wayside equipment for security systems includes CCTV with video analytics features, passenger information and public address systems, and the centralised supervision of the energy system.

Thales is part of a consortium led by Colas Rail and comprising Egis, which was awarded a €1bn design and build contract by Mitsubishi Corporation for the project.
