Project Alpha is an NR initiative to improve train performance and customer service for passenger and freight services in the North West and Central region. The project includes 104 funded schemes worth a combined £125m.

Under the contract, Mace will support NR by providing project and portfolio management services, including Project Management Office (PMO) services, to ensure best practice controls are implemented throughout the project.

The project aims to address common causes of delay, and will cover track renewal, improvements to extreme weather resilience, improvements to operational recovery times, improved security at trespass hotspots, and structural timetables.

Mace has already begun implementing a structured governance system for portfolio management and managing the scope of development for track upgrades.
