AUSTRIAN infrastructure manager ÖBB Infrastructure has awarded a €176m fit-out contract for the 27.3km Semmering Base Tunnel. The winning bidder is a consortium comprising Porr and Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group.

The contractors will install cabling, technical and safety equipment. This work is expected to start next summer, once all tunnelling activity has been completed.

Around 99% of the tunnel has been excavated and 64% of the 55km of inner concrete lining has been installed. Fit-out work is expected to be completed in 2029, ahead of opening in 2030. The project, which will connect Gloggnitz with Mürzzuschlag, was originally expected to open in 2026 but has been delayed by the complex geology encountered during tunnelling work

“With this major contract award intensive preparations are now beginning for the final construction phase before the tunnel is put into operation,” says ÖBB Infrastructure project manager, Mr Gerhard Gobiet.
