INFRASTRUCTURE manager Italian Rail Network (RFI) has named a consortium led by Manelli Impresa as preferred bidder for the contract to design and build a rail link to Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport on the island of Sardinia.

The consortium also includes Europea 92, RTP NET Engineering, ETS, Cooprogetti, SIIP and Francesco Morena.

The winning bid was €114m. The project includes construction of a 3.4km branch from Olbia Terranova station on the unelectrified Golfo Aranci - Macomer line to a new double-track terminus at the airport.

There will also be a spur just under 1km in length enabling trains running from Mancomer towards Golfo Aranci to reach the airport.

The project involves total investment of €231m and is being funded under the Italian government’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The new airport rail link is expected to enter service in June 2026.
