Implementation of the 437km-long, Rubbles 45bn ($US 699.1m) project started in 2007, with 396.4km of track laid along 26 stages since work began.

Between 2007 and 2010, 90.8km of track was laid along the six most difficult sections. In 2012, a co-financing agreement was signed between Russian Railways (RZD) and Novatek to double-track the remainder of the Tobolsk - Surgut section and install 14 level crossings on the Surgut - Korotchaevo section.

RZD says the development of the Tobolsk - Surgut - Korotchaevo line, alongside capacity improvements on the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Baikal - Amur Mainline, is its most important infrastructure project. This will allow the transport of raw materials, semi-finished products and finished products for the oil and gas industries, allowing for projected growth.

Capacity will be doubled to more than 40 million tonnes of freight a year. The project will allow the operation of trains up to 9,000 tonnes and with more than 100 wagons.
