The Smartrail 4.0 project will increase capacity on the Swiss rail network without building additional infrastructure by adopting a traffic management system based on ETCS and digitalisation. Smartrail 4.0 will result in the elimination of 70% of lineside signals and associated equipment and pave the way for automatic train operation.

For the RAM management element, Pöyry will investigate the reliability, availability and maintainability of railway systems using new innovative technologies. Pöyry says the focus will be on a safe and reliable expansion of the capacity of the Swiss railway network whilst minimising life cycle costs.

“We are particularly pleased to support SBB in their innovation programme, as smart infrastructure will be an important cornerstone for process and plant optimisation in the future,” says Mr Nicola Norghauer, head of Pöyry's transport department.
