THALES has completed a three-year signalling project on the 230km Humanes de Madrid - Monfragüe section of the standard-gauge Madrid - Cáceres - Valencia de Alcántara (Portuguese border) line.

The project involved equipping the line with CTC and Spain’s ASFA automatic train protection system. The new signalling is compatible with the future high-speed line which starts near Monfragüe and will serve the Extremadura region.

Included in the project was the installation of electronic interlockings, of which six are Thales technology, at Griñon, Illescas, Villaluenga-Yuncler, Montearagón, Erustes and Villamiel. Work also included the extension, adaptation and modification of two existing Thales interlockings at Humanes and Torrijos. LED signals and electric switch actuators have also been installed.

Single Track Automatic Release Block System (BLAU) with CTC has also been introduced, replacing the current telephone block system. This is in accordance with Spanish infrastructure manager Adif’s telephone block suppression plan, which is designed to improve safety. Traffic management is conducted centrally from Madrid Chamartin,  Manzanares, Ciudad Real and Seville Santa Justa.
