TRIAL operation on the 6km East Rail Line (EAL) cross-harbour extension from Hung Hom station to the new Exhibition Centre station at Wan Chai North and future terminus at Admiralty station began on February 1.

The line is the final section of the under-construction Shatin - Central Link (SCL) and will provide a direct connection between the Northeast New Territories, Central Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, becoming the island’s fourth rail connection.

MTR says that once the trial operation is complete, passenger services are expected to commence on the extension in June or July.

MTR says that railway construction works have been substantially completed. The trials, which are taking place off-peak and at night, are intended to ensure railway systems, facilities and staff are fully prepared to deliver a safe and reliable service.

The extension was due to open in the first quarter of 2021, but was delayed until the fourth quarter of 2021, and then the first quarter of 2022.

The SCL is one of IRJ’s 20 Projects to watch in 2022, which was published in the January edition of the magazine. Digital subscribers can read the article here.
