The tunnel under the coastal town of Varberg will include 900m of open concrete trough, 300m of concrete tunnel and 2.8km of rock tunnel.

The project includes a new station with a descent to the platforms, which will be situated in the trough at the northern end of the tunnel, along with a new freight yard north of Varberg. A total of 7.5km of new double track will be laid.

A number of consultants including Atkins completed the phase 1 design of the project, which included the development of the implementation plan. The next stage involves detailed planning for the construction phase of the new tunnel under a time and materials contract worth an initial £13m.

The West Coast Line project is being led by Trafikverket and Swiss construction company Implenia and is currently 85% complete, with full completion expected in 2025.
