The locomotives are powered by an MTU 16V 4000 R43 engine with an output of 2.2MW. There are two types of locomotive: the CKD8G freight unit with a maximum speed of 120km/h, of which 13 have been built, while the remaining seven comprise the CKD8H passenger version which has a top speed of 160km/h.

The locomotives are intended to haul trains on the 708km Buenos Aires – Rosario – Córdoba 1676mm-gauge main line.
