Modernisation of the locomotives, which are nicknamed Brejlovec in Czech or Goggles in English due to the front end resembling a skiing goggle, was first was completed by CZ Loko in 2001, with around 130 refurbished since.

The first of the four units, which are the last to be refurbished, is due to be delivered by the end of the year, while the remaining three will be delivered in Febraury.

The time line is strict as the locomotives are being reconstructed based on an exemption permitted by Czech rail safety authority Drážní Úřad, which will expire at the end of February 2020.

CZ Loko is already upgrading 50 class 742 four-axle diesel locomotives for ČD Cargo, with five of these locomotives already operating as Effishunter 1000.
