MBTA awarded MPI a contract in June 2017 to overhaul 10 F40 locomotives, the first of which returned to service in March. A second overhauled locomotive is due to enter service this week and the remaining eight units are due to be returned by August.

The overhaul programme includes the installation of remote monitoring and diagnostics systems, forward-facing cameras and modern brake and control systems.

The option for 27 additional locomotives is worth around $US 78.3m. The first overhauled unit from the second batch is due to return to MBTA by November 2020, with the final unit due for completion by late autumn 2021.
