Bidders raised concerns about the procurement process during two previous tenders and eventually took their grievances to the high court which found that the bidding process included clauses which appeared to favour suppliers from the United States.

PR denied that this was the case, and has assured both the Lahore High Court and Supreme Court that the re-launched procurement will be completed in a transparent manner.

• PR suffered a Rs 1.13bn ($US 14.5m) loss in 2010-11 due to discontinued train services. According to Railways minister Mr Ghulam Ahmed Bilour, Pakistan State Oil is providing the railway with diesel on a Rs 1bn line of credit, with the railway pushing to extend this to Rs 2bn.
