The locomotives will be based on Pesa's new Gama range, a design which has so far only been ordered as an electric locomotive by freight and commuter rail operators in Poland.

Pesa will be responsible for maintaining the fleet for 12 years using a pricing system dependant on distance operated by the new locomotives. The units will enter service from November 2015 and will replace older diesel locomotives, most of which are currently hired from Polish regional operator Regional Railways or freight operator PKP Cargo although some are now leased from Czech Railways (CD), for long distance services on non-electrified parts of the Polish network.

These are used on Intercity trains to Zamosc, Pila and international services to Šeštokai in Lithuania.
