The 1.5kV dc class 1600 locomotive will be equipped with batteries to enable catenary-free operation when overhead electrification is isolated for infrastructure maintenance.

The locomotive will be rebuilt at Strukton’s Zutphen workshop with support from Jacko Fijn Techniek.

Strukton says it power electronics subsidiary, Strukton Rolling Stock, is working with several parties on the development of hydrogen and battery trains. These include Vivarail, Britain, which is developing hydrogen and battery multiple units for non-electrified lines.
