The two and three-section freight locomotives are designed to operate on lines with severe operational challenges and challenging weather such as the Baikal - Amur Mainline and the Trans-Siberian Railway.

The 2ES5S electric locomotive is capable of hauling trains up to 7100 tonnes, while the addition of the intermediate booster section in the 3ES5S allows the haulage of trains of up to 9000 tonnes.

NEVZ says the locomotives feature a range of technical, ergonomic and environmental developments which will reduce maintenance, increase the distance between overhauls and also save energy.

Certification is expected to be completed in October.
