MEXICO’s National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) has received 15,493 tonnes of rail for the Mayan Train project on Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, with another 7000 tonnes due to be delivered by the end of the month.
The first 4833 tonnes manufactured in the United States by Steel Dynamics were delivered for section one (Palenque - Escárcega) on May 14. The section will require another 24,741 tonnes. The second shipment of 7005 tonnes for section two (Escarcega - Calkini) arrived in Puerto Progreso, Yucatan, on May 17 aboard the AAL Dalian freight ship from Fangcheng, China. The section will require another 23,476 tonnes.
The third shipment of 3655.56 tonnes arrived in Puerto Progreso on 26 May, from Japan for section three (Calkiní - Lzamal), with a further 26,170.44 required.
Another 7000 tonnes are due to arrive in Puerto Progreso by the end of July for section four (Izamal - Cancun) and section five (Cancun - Tulum). Another 60,628.58 and 29,472 tonnes are due to be delivered for each section, respectively, by the end of the year.
Fonatur says the rail meets the highest international safety standards, and it has been developing stockpiling sites to store the rail until construction begins.
