"Amtrak enters 2010 with a strong sense of optimism, enthusiasm and
purpose," says president and CEO Mr Joseph Boardman. "It's time to
retire our ageing fleet of coaches and locomotives. We're looking at
every source of funding, not just the federal government." Amtrak's
plan is expected to include the purchase of several hundred coaches and
more than 100 locomotives.
Amtrak has 982 coaches that have been
identified for replacement, while a significant proportion of its
locomotive fleet is also life-expired. A request for proposals has
already been issued for the supply of 125 passenger coaches and 20
electric locomotives.
