The line is proposed to run from Cierna nad Tisou at the Slovak-Ukrainian border to Austria and will include a bridge across the river Danube in parallel to the planned D4 motorway south of Bratislava, reaching the Austrian border near Kittsee. The new legislation will initiate the process to establish the Austrian alignment from Kittsee as well as the site of the gauge transfer terminal at Kledering marshalling yard in southern Vienna.

The amendment proposal has been published and is available for comments until the end of November 2019. Once in force more detailed planning can commence, which will inform a future environmental assessment for the project.
