BASELLAND Transport (BLT), Switzerland, has selected Stadler as preferred bidder for a contract to supply a fleet of 25 LRVs between October 2023 and 2025.
The contract is expected to be finalised in September and will also cover the provision of spare parts and an option for an additional 15 units. The contract is worth SFr 125m ($US 140m) inclusive of all options and services.
The LRVs will be used to operate services on BLT’s 65km metre-gauge light rail network, replacing the operator’s ageing fleet of 40 Schindler trams dating from the late-1970s and early-1980s.
The seven-section steel-bodied vehicles will be 45.5m long and 2.3m wide, with four powered bogies and one unpowered. The vehicles will have a maximum speed of 80km/h and a total capacity of 268 passengers, including 103 seated.
The vehicles will be 85% low-floor with step-free access, and will be equipped with a collision warning system, CCTV, air-conditioning, an integrated passenger information system and retractable steps.
The announcement is the culmination of a two-year tendering process. BLT first issued a call for tenders for the contract in May 2018.
