AUSTRIAN Federal Railways (ÖBB) has agreed a contract with Siemens for the supply of up to 200 Desiro ML regional emus over the next five years. The contract also includes an option for maintenance of the vehicles, and if all elements are fulfilled, it will be worth nearly Euros 1 billion.

Designed for a top-speed of 160km/h, the emus will be used on cross-border regional rail services between Austria and Germany, with each three-car train having 217 seats. The trains are likely to be built at a Siemens plant either in Vienna or in Kredfeld, Germany.
"We are pleased to have come out on top in one of Europe's largest invitations to tender for emus for regional rail service," says CEO of Siemens mobility division, Mr Hans-Jörg Grundmann.
