BOB was awarded the network contract by Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) in December following an open tender. The contract covers approximately 700,000 train-km per year and includes the operation of the Freilassing - Bad Reichenhall - Berchtesgaden line for 15 years from December 2021 and Traunstein - Ruhpolding line for 14 years from December 2022.

BOB will lease five trains already in service on the network, which are currently being converted and modernised for current operator Berchtesgaden Local Railway (BLB), for 15 years, and two new trains, which are intended for use on the Traunstein - Ruhpolding branch, for 14 years.

“The re-use of our existing fleet on the Chiemgau - Berchtesgaden route shows that our sustainable concept of utilisation is paying off,” says Mr Thomas Schmidt, managing director of Alpha Trains passenger division. “We have extensive experience with modernisation and refurbishment projects and can ensure that passengers will feel comfortable in our modern and comfortable trains in the future as well.

“With the newly purchased low-floor EMUs for the route between Traunstein and Ruhpolding, comprehensive barrier-free accessibility will be achieved.”
