londonssl.jpgBombardier will supply its Cityflo 650 moving block automatic train
control system, which has already been successfully deployed on lines 1
and 6 of the Madrid Metro, increasing capacity by 30%.

Bombardier has committed to installing and testing the new system
without any weekend closures, and by 2018 will equip 310km of track
(40km in tunnels), 113 stations, 191 S-Stock trains (also supplied by
Bombardier), 49 engineering trains, and six heritage trains. The
contract includes a two-year warranty period.

The project will boost capacity on the District Line by 24% to 50,000
passengers per hour, while Metropolitan Line capacity will increase by
27% to 44,500 passengers per hour. On the Circle and Hammersmith &
City Lines, new signalling, longer trains, and enhanced frequencies
will raise capacity by 65% to 43,500 per hour.

The SSL signalling contract was retendered following the collapse of
Public Private Partnership contractor Metronet in June 2007. TfL
decided to retender after concluding the original contract did not
provide the best technical solution or value for money.
