Phase 1 of the line, which has 10 stations, provides a metro connection to the Drumul Taberei district in the southwest of the city. The Lei 3.2bn ($US 776.21m) project was partially funded with a €251.8m grant from the European Union (EU) through the Cohesion Fund.
Construction began in November 2011, and was undertaken by FCC, Spain, Astaldi, Italy, and AB Construct and ACM Delta, Romania.
The line has a maximum speed of 80km/h and services will eventually operate at two minute headways, with an end-to-end journey time of 12 minutes.
