Line 1 runs for 23km from Washermanpet - airport, while the 22km-long Line 2 links Chennai Central Railway Station with St Thomas Mount. In total 105km of track will be laid on double-tracked lines, including 15km at the Koyambedu depot. Work on the 21km elevated section will be completed by the end of 2013, while the 24km underground sections are scheduled to be finished by mid-2015.
 
The contract is Alstom's first infrastructure project in India, although the company won a contract in 2010 to supply 168 metro cars for Chennai metro with delivery set to begin by the end of 2012. It has also won train control and signalling system contracts in Delhi and Bangalore.
