Dart Underground is an 8.6km link between Docklands and Inchicore with
7.6km-long twin-bore tunnels running beneath the city centre.
Underground stations will be built at Spencer Dock, Pearse, St
Stephen's Green, Christchurch, and Heuston (pictured), with a new
surface station at Inchicore, where the line joins the Kildare line.

The tunnel will connect the northern Dart commuter line to Howth with
the western line to Hazelhatch. It will have capacity for up to 20
trains per direction per hour, allowing up to 64,000 passengers to use
the line hourly. Subject to the granting of a railway order,
construction will begin in 2012 and two tunnel boring machines will be
launched from the Docklands, excavating the tunnels at an average depth
of 24m. The line is scheduled to open in 2018.

The project is being implemented as a public-private partnership, and
the formal procurement process commenced on May 12 with the publication
of the contract notice in the Official Journal of the European Union.
The deadline for the submission of the pre-qualification questionnaire
is July 20.
