Normal train operations have resumed in the Tokyo metropolitan area and the western and central part of northern Japan. JR East expects to reopen the 378km Nasu-Shiobara - Morioka section of the Tohoku Shinkansen by late April.

JR East says it is making steady progress in repairing damage to its network caused by the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11. It expects train services to be "almost back to normal" by the end of this month.
