Detailed design and preparatory works will now begin, with construction
due to start early next year. Construction is already underway on the
Trafford Bar - St Werburgh's Road and Piccadilly - Droylsden lines,
which will open in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

To support the expansion of the network Bombardier and Vossloh-Kiepe
will supply eight additional Flexity LRVs, six of which will be funded
by the DfT.

Both projects are part of the Phase 3B expansion plan, which will take
the network to 97.3km, three times its current size. In addition to the
Ashton and East Didsbury extensions, Phase 3B includes the extension of
the Chorlton line to Wythenshawe and Manchester Airport, a second line
across the city centre, and new links to Rochdale and Oldham town
centres.
