POLISH operator PKP Intercity is reinstating direct passenger trains between Warsaw and Hajnówka after a 17-year gap.

As part of a new timetable, the southern part of Podlasie has been added to the PKP Intercity network. There will be two trains per day.

Introducing these services takes the number of locations served by PKP Intercity to 420, up from 300 in 2014.

“Our goal is the even development of all regions of the country, and not only selected, largest cities, as it has been over the years,” says Mr Maciej Małecki, secretary of state at the Ministry of State Assets. “The development strategy of PKP Intercity fits perfectly into this trend. We want all regions to have direct, fast, and comfortable rail connections with the largest centres, including the capital. This will make people want to live, develop, and create businesses everywhere, not only in metropolises. Their quality of life will improve. It is also worth remembering that the development of railways is a driver for the entire Polish economy,”

PKP Intercity also confirmed that the first of its new Combo coaches will enter traffic during the summer. They will be usedon the Gdynia - Kraków - Gdynia,  Wrocław - Gdynia – Wrocław, and Wrocław - Giżycko - Wrocław services.
