The project is being funded through China's 11th Five-Year Plan
(2006-2010), which includes around Yuan 200 billion for investment in
metro and light rail projects.
A network of eight lines totalling 231.5km is ultimately envisaged in
Qingdao. Plans for a metro network in the city have existed since the
early 1990s, when the municipality established a metro company to
implement the construction of a 16.5km, 13-station line from Xizhen to
No 9 Cotton Mill.
