The class 395s are equipped for operation on both 25kV overhead and
750V dc third rail electrification systems, allowing them to work on
the conventional network beyond Ashford to Faversham, Dover and
Margate. The full service will begin in December, and the trains will
also be used on a special shuttle service between St Pancras and
Stratford in 2012 in connection with the Olympic Games, which London is
hosting.
The fleet of 29 six-car trains will be maintained by
Hitachi at a purpose-built £53 million depot at Ashford. Eighteen
trains have already been delivered to Southeastern and the remaining 11
were shipped from Japan on June 11, and will arrive in Britain in
August.
