The first contract is being funded by the French government and will last one year. It involves initially devising a multimodal traffic model for the city and then designing the first line of a tram network. It is hoped to complete the first 15km tram line by 2014.
The second contract, funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, was signed on behalf of Georgian Railways and concerns a project to divert the existing railway around the city to free up land in the centre for redevelopment and the construction of a boulevard and tram line. Systra is in a consortium with Apur, France, and Spectrum, Georgia, for the study which will last eight months starting in January.
